Scam Alert: Out of Stock

As returns continue to skyrocket, online shoppers need to be on high alert for a crafty scam recently reported to BBB Scam Tracker. Scammers are capitalizing on the festive rush, claiming purchased items are out of stock, and then conveniently failing to process the promised refunds.

Here’s how this scam works: You spot a product online, often through enticing social media ads. Excited, you follow the link to the company’s website, make the purchase, and wait for the holiday magic to happen. However, shortly after your card is charged, a seemingly apologetic email arrives, stating the product is unexpectedly out of stock, promising a refund. The catch? The refund never materializes, and attempts to contact the online shop go unanswered.

A victim of this scam shared their experience with BBB Scam Tracker, revealing, “The order went through, money was deducted, but after a week of waiting for my order to ship, it got canceled, claiming the size was out of stock, and the money was never returned.”

In reality, the product likely never existed, and scammers are banking on you not noticing the missing refund. The silver lining? If you used a credit card, you have the power to contest the charge and reclaim your funds.

Tips to Dodge These Scams:

  • Research the business before you buy anything
  • Keep detailed records, including receipts
  • Pay with a credit card, as they offer enhanced protection.
  • Ensure the website is secure
  • Beware of social media promotions

As you navigate the digital marketplace, stay vigilant, and arm yourself with knowledge. By remaining informed and cautious, you can ensure a joyful and scam-free shopping experience.
